Not Computers

I have been told recently that I don’t really say anything about myself in these posts, that it is only about computers and inanimate things. Well, I talk about things because I’m more comfortable dealing with objects rather than people. I’m trying to change this about myself. One way accomplishing this is just by getting out more often and interacting with others.

I do this at school more so these days. I interact with other grad students to see if they can examine my stuff for specific properties. I talk with secretaries and other department staff about job prospects and most of the time asking if they’ve seen my boss. The latter is definitely a tale for another time.

Another way I am moving towards being a well-rounded individual is by having pets, specifically cats. We’ve had two cats for while now. My wife asked me recently for another kitten, and something made me say yes. We’re going to pick it up this Friday for the local animal shelter. Anyway, how do cats lead one to be more human?

Communing with cats allows you to think about things from a different perspective. Something simple would be, this desk is only as high as my waist, but to a cat it is about four times its height. A cat has to exert more effort to touch the top of the desk, than for me to do so. To me this gives me the idea that a task that is easy for me to do may not be as easy for others. A more complex idea is trying to comprehend how the cats sense when I am coming home, minutes before I call to inform my wife, and/or before I open the door. This leads to the concepts of bonds between pets and caretakers, and how those bonds can be at levels incomprehensible to modern science. This contributes to me being open-minded about the multitudes of possibilities in our realities.
