Some Skill Sets

I made a couple lists last night of the skill sets I have in the fields of chemistry and computers. This is in an effort to help figure out what I really want to do jobwise.

Computer Skills

PC and Macintosh maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair.

Installation and maintenance of operating systems and programs software.

Operating systems experience:

  • PC’s: Windows 3.X/9X/NT/2000/XP, DOS, Linux (various flavors), BeOS, OS/2, and QNX.
  • Mac’s: Mac OS 6.0-9.2.2, Mac OS X 10.2.X (Jaguar) and 10.3.X (Panther), BeOS, and Linux (Debian and YDL).

Internet programs experience:

  • Web browsers: Mozilla, Netscape, FireFox, Internet Explorer, iCab, Safari, etc.
  • FTP clients: RBrowser Lite, WS_FTP, etc.
  • Blogging software: MovableType, WordPress, etc.
  • Command line programs: Apache, FTP, MySQL, SSH, Telnet, etc.
  • Web design: CSS, HTML, PHP, etc.

Office / productivity programs experience:

  • Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Word), WordPerfect, OpenOffice, and Appleworks.
  • Adobe Creative Suite (Acrobat Professional, GoLive, Illustrator, InDesign, and Photoshop).

Science programs experience:

  • Chemistry: Cambridge ChemOffice (ChemDraw, Chem3D, etc.) and ACD Labs Chemistry Suite.
  • Data analysis: Igor Pro and Origin.
  • Information & reference searching: SciFinder Scholar, Beilstein Commander, and Internet search engines.
  • Molecular modeling and computation: Spartan, Titan, and Gaussian 03.

Utility programs experience:

  • PC’s: Anti-virus protection and spyware removal software, Norton Utilites, Partition Magic, etc.
  • Mac’s: Norton Anti-Virus & Utilities, DiskWarrior, Disk Copy, Disk/Drive Utility, etc.

Hardware component and peripherals experience:

  • Cases, power supplies (AT, ATX), fans, and external enclosures (IDE, SCSI).
  • CPUs, mainboards / motherboards, and RAM.
  • Interface / storage controllers: PCI to IDE, SCSI, USB, and Firewire.
  • Input devices: keyboards, mice, pen / drawing tablets, and scanners (SCSI, USB).
  • Modems and network interface cards: PCMCIA, PCI, and USB.
  • Output devices: monitors, printers, sound cards, and speakers.
  • Storage devices: floppy drives (3.5” and 5.25”), hard drives (IDE.SCSI), CD-ROM drives (IDE, SCSI), CD-RW recorders (IDE), DVD-ROM drives(IDE), DVD+/-RW recorder (IDE, USB, Firewire), and ZIP drives 100/250(IDE, USB).

Organic / Polymer Synthesis and Characterization

Data Analysis

Organic synthesis experience:

  • Carbon-carbon bond formations.
  • Functional group transformations.
  • Metal-catalyzed coupling reactions.
  • Organometallic complex synthesis.
  • Oxidations and reductions.
  • Polymerizations:
    • Acyclic Diene Metathesis (ADMET).
    • Anionic.
    • Free radical.
    • Metal-catalyzed coupling.
    • Ring Opening Metathesis Polymerization (ROMP).
  • Schlenk line & glove box manipulations.
  • Solid-phase synthesis.

Characterization / instrumental analysis experience:

  • Structural and purity elucidation:
    • NMR (proton, carbon, fluorine) - Bruker and Varian.
    • FT-IR - Shimadzu and others.
    • GC/MS - HP.
    • Polarimeter - Perkin-Elmer.
    • GPC - Waters; RI / MALLS Detectors - Wyatt.
    • HPLC - HP; UV Detector - HP.
  • Thermal analysis:
    • DSC/TGA - Shimadzu.
  • Photophysical analysis:
    • Spectrofluorometer - SPEX / Jobin-Yvon.
    • UV/Vis/NIR - OLIS and others.

Purification experience:

  • Chromatography:
    • TLC / preparative TLC - alumina and silica.
      • Stains - PMA, KMnO4, etc.
    • Column chromatography - alumina, silica, & Florisil (magnesium-based).
    • Medium-pressure chromatography - Biotage system.
    • High-pressure chromatography - reverse-phase.
  • Distillation under ambient pressure and vacuum.
  • Lyophilization (freeze drying).
  • Reprecipitation.
  • Recrystallization.
