New To Me Computer Parts

I’m not usually into dumpster diving, but when I was taking the trash out a few hours ago, I noticed somebody had threw away a computer, but left most of the parts in it. The case was beaten up pretty bad, but I was able to salvage the following:

  • an MSI 865PE Neo2-P Platinum Edition Motherboard,
  • an Intel Pentium 4 2.40 GHz w/ HT Technology (800 MHz FSB) CPU w/ 512 kB cache,
  • CPU heatsink with fan,
  • one 80 mm fan,
  • two sticks of 256 MB DDR466 RAM,
  • one 3.5 inch floppy drive,
  • a Magicspin DVDRW 1008IM DVD drive,
  • two round IDE cables,
  • one round floppy cable,
  • and an ATX power supply.

The only part that was damaged was the DVD drive, because the tray was broken. I could probably “hack” it into working, but it’s probably not worth the trouble.

I put the new mainboard, CPU, RAM, and ATX PS in my system, since the components were faster than I what was currently using, which was an Athlon XP 2000+ with 512 MB DDR266 RAM. I had to reinstall Windows, since switching out the motherboard is a pretty major change in the system, and of course had to reactivate. So far, it appears to work without any issues.
