Newark, DE has the worst electrical grid for any city in which I have ever worked.
The power went out in the section of the city near the University for about 10 minutes or so yesterday, yet again. This can be very, very dangerous in a laboratory situation, and there just happens to be plenty of labs in this area. During power outages, the ventilation hoods in the lab do not function, so if there happens to be not so friendly stuff spewing from your reaction and the hoods shut down… let’s just say you should close the sash quickly and leave the room. Luckily, I didn’t have to do this yesterday, but it’s always a possibility.
Also, its annoying to come in and see that your overnight reaction didn’t proceed as planned because a power outage during the night shut down the hot plate-stirrer. Since this has happened a couple times now, I going to have to get a battery back up system for our stirrers, at least.
